Monitoring Humidity / Temperature sensors with HWg-STE / HWg-STE Plus in op5

In this article we will be adding the HW-Group HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus Humidity and/or Temperature sensor(s) to op5. Its quick, easy and requires no additional plug-ins or software.


We will assume you have set up your HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus networking and have 1 or 2 sensors as well logged into the web User Interface.

Step 1: Enable SNMP

You first will need to enable SNMP on you HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus in the web User Interface. Navigate to the SNMP tab. There are two default Community names, you will be concerned with the community name that only has READ selected.

NOTE: It is suggested you change the name to something unique so that no one else can retrieve  performance data from your device.

  1. Change the public community string name to something unique.
  2. Check Enable
  3. Click “Save”

Step 2: Setup HWg-STE Plus in op5

  1. Go to the global Configuration (Mouse over the gear icon at the top and select configure in the drop down)
  2. Fill in the following information to add your HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus;
    • host_name = the name of your HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus [Red arrow]
    • address = the IP address of the HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus [Blue Arrow]
    • Autodetect Services = deselect the check box. We will be defining the service in the next step.
    • action_url = drop down select http (This will give you a link under the host to the HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus web user interface) [OrangeArrow]

  3. Click “Add Service”
  4. The next page will scan the device for services. We have delected this option in the step before [orange arrow] so this does not apply. It will not find your Sensors (or Digital Inputs if you have and HWg-STE Plus)
  5. Click “Finish”
  6. You must save your new configuration. To do this click on the disk icon in the top right hand corner.

  7. Click “Save object I have changed”

Your HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus is now added. Step 3 we will add sensors.

Step 3: Adding a Humidity and/or Temperature sensor in op5

  1. Go to the global Configuration (Mouse over the gear icon at the top and select configure in the drop down)
  2. Under “Edit host” Select your HWg-STE or HWg-STE Plus device and click “go”

  3. Click on “Services for host [name of your device]”
  4. Fill in the following information to add a sensor;
    • service_description = name of the sensor (Humidity or Temperature) [Orange Arrow]
    • check_command = snmp_check (we are using the Simple Network Management Protocol to grab the values from the sensor) [Red Arrow]
    • check_command_args = settings that the check command uses. Each setting is broken up by an ! (optional settings are at the end)[Blue Arrow]
      Example 1st sensor: 1.3.6.1.4.1.21796.4.1.3.1.4.1!100!140!public -u F –label Temperature
      • First number is the OID (Object identifier)
        • 1st Sensor = 1.3.6.1.4.1.21796.4.1.3.1.4.1
        • 2nd Sensor = 1.3.6.1.4.1.21796.4.1.3.1.4.2
      • Second number is the Warning threshold range
      • Third Number is the Critical threshold range
      • “public” is the Community String that you set in Step 1 (remember we recommend changing this from the default “public”)
      • (optional) Adding a –label at the end will display a value name in graphs (Humidity or Temperature).
      • (optional) (not shown) Adding -u will add units to the data. Example for fahrenheit: -u F

  5. Click “Submit”
  6. You must save the new configuration like before when adding the devices by clicking on the Floppy icon in the top right hand corner. Then click “save objects I have changed” on the next page.

You have now added a Humidity or Temperature sensor. Give op5 about 5 minutes and you should see the data starting to graph like below.

To add another sensor (max of two for both the HWg-STE and HWg-STE Plus) repeat Step 3.
